Midwest Winter Essentials

“Help! I need advice on snow clothes/gear! We visit the snow maybe 5x per year. Snow pants? Jacket? Two layers? Thoughts?”

I got this question from an Instagram follower recently and thought it would make a great blog post, considering I have followers all around the country… Not just in the midwest!

Here was my response…

  1. I actually do not own snow pants currently and really haven’t had a need to over the last ten years or so. However, if I had children and was going to be playing outside in the snow with them a lot, I would definitely get snow pants.

  2. I have had this Marmot coat for the last 6+ years, and I absolutely LOVE IT. The big hood and the slightly longer length are perfect for me. It isn’t cheap, but it’s amazing quality and will continue to last for years. A good winter coat is a worthy investment for us Midwest girls!

  3. When I do need an extra layer on bottom (i.e. when going on a walk on extra cold days or shoveling snow off the driveway), I usually just wear sweatpants over top of a pair of leggings. Fleece leggings like these are also a game changer!

  4. Last thing… quality, warm footwear is important! I got these boots about a month ago and have been wearing them nonstop. I wear them everywhere from a quick trip to the grocery store to longer hikes through lots of cold and snow! Great grip, waterproof, the perfect height, and warm (but not too warm). I seriously love them!

I hope this post is helpful, whether you are a fellow Midwest girl or just like to visit areas of colder temps this time of year!
